What is an STD?


An Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) is a disease or infection that is spread from one person to another during sex. There are more than 25 STD's that can be passed from one person to another by having vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Some STD's can be passed by genital touching.

STD's are among the most common infections known - more than 15 million people in the United State become infected with one or more STD's each year. The United States has the highest STD rate in the industrialized world-roughly half of all Americans become infected with an STD before the age of 35.

Signs and Symptoms


Many STD's have symptoms. The only way to find out for sure that you have one is to be tested by a doctor. Some STD's do have symptoms. See your doctor if you have:
  • Sores, bumps, or blisters near your sex organs, rectum, or mouth
  • Burning and pain when you urinate or have a bowel movement
  • Swelling or redness in your throat
  • Fever, chillis, and aches
  • Swelling in the area around your sex organs
  • Drip or discharge from the penis
  • Unusual discharge or smell from the vagina
  • Pain in the pelvic area
  • Burning or itching around the vagina
  • Bleeding that is not a regular period
  • Pain during sex
